“How many grafts do I need?” is usually the first question people ask before a hair transplant, because the number of grafts shapes both the plan and the cost. There is no single answer, but you can get a realistic idea once you understand what a graft is and which factors matter.

What is a graft?

A graft (follicular unit) is a small natural group of hairs taken from the donor area, usually the back and sides of the head. A graft contains one to four hairs; on average a graft carries around two hairs. This is why “grafts” and “hairs” are not the same number: 3,000 grafts usually means roughly 6,000 to 7,000 hairs.

Typical graft ranges by stage of hair loss

Doctors often describe male hair loss with the Norwood scale. The ranges below are commonly used estimates. Your own number can be lower or higher depending on your hair and the result you want.

The factors that change your number

Why more grafts is not always better

Packing too many grafts into a small area can reduce the survival of the grafts, and over-harvesting can leave the donor area visibly thin. The aim is the right number placed well: natural hairline design, the right graft in the right place, and channels opened at natural angles (see the oblique channel technique).

Can I need two sessions?

For advanced hair loss, the area to cover can be larger than what one session can safely achieve. In that case the front and mid-scalp are usually treated first, and the crown can be considered in a second session after the first result has matured.

How we estimate your graft count

An initial estimate can be made from photos. Please send clear, well-lit pictures of your head from the front, top, back and both sides, with your hair dry and combed back. The team assesses your hair loss, donor area and hair type and suggests a graft range and technique. The final number is confirmed during the examination before the procedure.

Frequently asked questions

How many hairs are in 3,000 grafts?

Usually around 6,000 to 7,000 hairs, because a graft contains one to four hairs.

Is 2,000 grafts enough for a hairline?

For many people with temple recession, 1,500 to 2,500 grafts can rebuild the hairline. The right number depends on the size of the area and your hair characteristics.

Will the back of my head look thin after the procedure?

When grafts are taken evenly and within the safe limit of the donor area, the thinning is not usually noticeable once the hair grows. This is why donor capacity is assessed before the number of grafts is decided.

Can women have a hair transplant?

Some women with stable, localised hair loss can be candidates. The cause of the hair loss needs to be evaluated first, so a medical examination is essential.
